How can you be sure the food you eat is good for you?

By Gabrielle

Hello, my name is Gabrielle! I’m a Holistic Nutritionist, recipe developer, food photographer and passionate traveller. I blog at where I share delicious recipes and easy tips for healthy living. As a nutritionist, my primary focus to improve our health centers around food, and particularly the quality of the food that we eat. I am a firm believer that the quality of what we put in our mouth directly impacts the quality of our health.

In my opinion, quality food means food that is as pure as possible, free of synthetic chemicals, not processed or minimally processed, and ideally whole foods that grow in nature.

How can we determine if the food we buy meets any of these criteria? It’s true that this can be difficult. One way is by purchasing directly from local farms where you can talk to the farmers and confirm how their food is grown and raised, but many people live in areas where this is not always practical or even possible. Thankfully, the food industry has a mature certification option called “Organic”. Buying products which have been certified organic, while not perfect, does assure you that certain quality standards have been adhered to.

I first encountered organic food 16 years ago when I started doing some research about food and how I could live a healthier lifestyle. I had never heard of it before, but I immediately felt that it was a good thing. The more I read about it, the more I loved the philosophy of living closer to nature and reducing the amount of chemicals in my body. It took some time, but I eventually transitioned over to eating fully organic at home, and 16 years later, I’m very happy that I did. I have never regretted my decision.

While not everyone agrees with the benefits of food grown and produced according to Organic Certifications, I personally have seen many benefits in my life because of eating organic food. Here are some of the main reasons that have played an important part for me to switch to organic, and why I think you should consider introducing organic food into your life too.

  • The potential health benefits. It made me more aware of the connection between what I eat and how it reacts in my body. Good food provides me with good energy.
  • Better practices. It made me aware of the consequences of modern agriculture on the environment. Whenever possible, I choose to support my local farmers and sustainable agricultural methods. It’s like investing in a system of food production that minimizes our impact on the environment by using less chemicals, and offers more humane practices for animals.
  • Involvement and education. Asking the food industry to provide us with food that is healthy and to do it in a responsible manner. I’ve seen this improving so much in the recent years, it’s wonderful to watch! Educating myself created a desire to ask more questions about where my food comes from, and how it’s processed. I realized that eating organic was not depriving myself of anything, but rather it opened-up a new world of delicious possibilities.
  • The taste. Organic food generally offers a pure taste, the ingredients tend to really shine and give you more flavours. That’s my favourite part. I always said to my friends that organic food tastes so good, once you start, you’ll be hooked! So yummy!

Thankfully as more people embrace the connection between food and health, the food industry is taking note. More and more progressive companies are adopting a healthy approach to producing their products and proving this commitment by obtaining an Organic Certification for their products. When companies embrace the ideals of organic food, we all benefit because as demand increases, it becomes available to more people. It’s not uncommon these days to find organic products alongside their conventional counterparts, or even entire sections in the grocery store devoted to organic food. Start introducing organic food into your diet, and show companies with organic products that you support their organic initiative. It’ll be good for you, the planet, and so delicious too!

I hope you’ll join me and Leclerc GoPure in the coming months as I share more information about the organic certification process, the tasty organic lifestyle and some of my experiences. I can’t wait to share more of this topic with you! Go organic! GoPure!
